A Head of Lettuce becomes Oral Vaccine to save baby pigs

The Second Open Seminar '08 Laboratory of Agricultural Process Engineering, Kyoto U.

We are holding the second Open Seminar sponsored by Lab. of Agricultural Process Engineering as below. This is a very good opportunity to discuss and contact with researchers of overseas research institutes. Any participants are welcome!

Title: A Head of Lettuce becomes Oral Vaccine to save baby pigs

Presenter: Haruhiko Murase (President of Japanese Society of Agricultural, Biological and Environmental Engineers and Scientists, Professor Osaka Prefecture Univ.)

Date and Time: May 15 (Thu),17:00-18:00

Abstract: A particular gene can produce a protein called EX2G which may protect baby pigs from sideration of edema disease. Bacillus coli has be used as a host in the process of producing such a substance even it is very costly. There is a big expectation on development an innovative low cost nonanimal production system in phermaceutical industry.Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has launched a 50 million dollar national project for development of medical protein using GM-crops. A key technology of the project is an application of plant factory for production of medical protein. BICS Engineering Lab.,OPU has been taking a part of researches in this national project. Latest results of the research work of ‘big pig business’ will be presented at the seminar.
